Local Activities

There are SO MANY day hikes and fun outdoor activities right here in Pearisburg and the surrounding areas.

Whether you are having the fam join you while you Zero for a couple days or you want to check out Cascade Falls or grab a cold beer at a local brewery, ARHH is where all the fun starts!

Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia and possibly on the entire East Coast. The 69 ft. falls crash into a large pool surrounded by two hundred foot cliff walls from which large ice formations hang in the winter.

Kelly Knob Overlook

Hike a segment of the Appalachian Trail to a Kelly's Knob, a rocky overlook looking over the valley below.

This is a great day hike for families or groups looking to get out for a short hike on the Appalachian Trail in Jefferson National Forest.

The trail starts off ascending 500' in the first 0.5 mile but everything following this is a nice easy stroll along a ridge. Follow this for another 1.5 miles until an intersection with a sign and blue trail markers leading to the lookout is seen on the right.

There's a firepit and several rocky outlooks to explore and take pictures of.

Clover Hollow Bridge

The 100 year old Clover Hollow Bridge (or Sinking Creek Bridge) is one of Virginia's remaining seven historic covered bridges.

The 70 foot span, impossible to miss on Route 601, is only open to foot traffic.

A small wayside park offers parking space for bridge visitors and a creek-side picnic table for a peaceful lunch.

Angels Rest Overlook

Angels Rest Overlook is 1.5 miles up Pearis Mountain to a scenic overlook. The difficulty rating is moderate but steep with elevations of 2000 ft. to 3550 ft. But the views are Ah-mazing and well worth the climb!

McAfee Knob

McAfee's Knob offers up classic Blue Ridge views with great photography opportunities at the summit. This is also a great intro to hiking on the AT.

This is a steady climb to the summit, with an elevation gain of 1740ft over the 4.4 miles to the top from the parking lot at RT311, so it's a great workout. The hike is through the woods until you reach the summit, where you will have some of the best views of the Southern Shenandoah Valley as well as the photogenic rock overlook. For your return, simply retrace your steps for a total 8.8 mile hike. OR, if you are photographing at sunset, you may opt to take the fire road back to RT311, shaving 1/2 mile off the trip, and making the return in the dark through the woods much easier (I highly recommend doing this or camping if you want a sunset or sunrise summit!).

The nearby New River provides for many family friendly activities such as Kayaking, Tubing and fishing.  Ask about these when checking in or call us prior to your arrival.
